Here's the problem that I see with many of my clients.
You have your plan for 2012. You know your numbers. You are clear with how much you need to charge and how much you need to sell.
But you are having trouble finding the confidence to believe that you'll make those numbers a reality. Where are you going to find those clients? Will they really pay to work with you?
The more you think about it, the more worried and anxious you become. It isn't long before you stop working all together and start watching episodes of Jersey Shore.
This is what I call "Big Picture Paralysis" Syndrome or BPPS. It happens to the best of us. Here's how to tackle it:
1. Create your plan. Then focus on executing one project at a time. Focus on one project at a time and execute to the best of your ability. If you are working on getting your first 10 clients, then focus on that. If you are filling a group program, fill it. If you are creating a product, then create a product. Don't worry about what is coming next or how you are going to get to your big picture number. Know that every step along the way is essential to achieving your goals.
You have to create the foundation before you start working on the walls. And the roof can't go on before the walls. You get where I'm going…
2. Opportunities will appear that you can't see right now, as long as you stay clear about your goals. My tennis coach was famous for saying, "You earn your lucky shots. The more you practice, the more they come." I truly believe in that. Once you execute each part of your plan to the best of your ability, opportunities will arrive that you never would have foreseen. Some of them will feel like "lucky shots". Others will be opportunities that require work and strategy.
This is where the more spiritual folks say, "Don't try to figure out the HOW". I like to say, "don't try to figure out ALL the how". You just need some of it.
There is no way I would have foreseen every opportunity that has arrived in my business each year. I just know if I give it my all - the opportunities will come.
3. Focus on the Cause. The Money is the Effect. You didn't start this work for the money and in the end the money will not be your greatest satisfaction. The money is an effect. The cause is the quality of your work and how much you put yourself out into the world. Don't get too caught up in the money aspect of it all. Put your energy into delivering a unique value to your customers. Then the money will come.
Focus on execution. Be on the lookout for opportunities. And, be the cause of your success. This should help you stay on track for your plan. I'll be here with you every step of the way.

Is the MBA a similar sale? The MBA was originally a degree in "Business Administration," and delivers on the promise of presenting business and organizational studies, but is also sold as "management and leadership." Some business schools call themselves Schools of Management. Does the MBA have management clothes?
Many professors in business schools think not. Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor in the Stanford School of Business reviewed dozens of studies of the results of business school education, and concluded "There is little evidence that mastery of the knowledge acquired in business schools enhances people's careers, or that even attaining the MBA credential itself has much effect on graduates' salaries or career attainment…A large body of evidence suggests that the curriculum taught in business schools has only a small relationship to what is important for success in business…. there was too little attention given to developing leadership and interpersonal skills, and too little emphasis on communication skills.[i]"
Warren Bennis and James O'Toole, professors in the University of Southern California business school, wrote in the HBR article How Business Schools Lost Their Way: "Business schools are on the wrong track…business school faculties simply must rediscover the practice of business.[ii]" Henry Mintzberg, Professor of Management Studies at McGill University, and considered a leading expert on strategy, wrote a book called Managers Not MBAs, and wrote "The trouble with "management" education is that it is business education, and leaves a distorted impression of management…we need to build the craft and the art of managing into management education and thereby bring these back into the practice of managing…conventional MBA programs train the wrong people in the wrong ways with the wrong consequences.[iii]"
Although some business schools have responded with more courses on communication, emphasis on team projects, and a focus on "capstone projects," the practice, and hence the skills of management are not designed into or delivered in MBA programs. Executive MBA programs tend to produce more relevance for participants since the participants are practicing managers and executives, and there is a greater focus on case studies and applications in the participant's companies. But the foundations of the practices of management, the coaching in those practices and the focus on meeting standards in performance of those practices is still missing. We don't train our physicians this way.
I taught in a business school, Presidio School of Management, for three years. Presidio focused on integrating courses on sustainability into the curriculum, but beyond one course - 5% of the course work - had no focus on management practice or skill. I found the faculty and administration did not find the conversation of the importance of management practice and skill relevant as a promise of the school or a fundamental purpose of the curriculum.
Why does this gaping blind spot exist, and how do we to find the learning venue for actual management and leadership skills? Bennis and O'Toole claim in their article that business schools have become dominated by academics that have organized the school offerings to support their scholarly careers. And the market for MBA's is not educated to the criticisms of the programs. MBA students, around one hundred and twenty thousand of them in the US alone, are looking for the currently valued credential for their careers. Perhaps they assume they are getting the skills of management they will need, or know that employers and HR departments recognize the MBA, not actual management skills in their hiring. Developing management skill is left to on the job experience, and the filtering of the promotion regimes in companies.
I hope to see a focus on management skill development in business schools in the future, and it was in fact my purpose in teaching at Presidio to promote that. But there needs to be a new conversation in the business school industry for that to happen, and a more educated clientele for management development.
However, the development of management and leadership skill, actual hands on skills that make a difference in the performance of teams, organizations, and companies has been the focus of the Institute for Generative Leadership (IGL) since 1993. I hope to see the discipline of Generative Leadership - where these skills are developed - in business schools someday, but for now it is available in the Generative Leadership Program offered by the Institute. The program is designed to elevate the measurable leadership impact of participants through management and leadership skills in the performance of teams, organizations, companies, and communities. The development of skill is done through practice working with the real work and life commitments of participants with their teams, provides personal coaching, and organizes participants into leadership and learning teams. How To Start An AAU Basketball Team  by Anthony
Starting an AAU Basketball team is the dream of many basketball coaches as AAU Basketball is the most competitive level of youth basketball in the country. Here are some pointers for building a successful AAU Basketball team.
AAU Basketball is one of the fastest growing segments of the youth sports industry. Club teams for both boys and girls range from players as young as 8 years old all the way through high school. When it comes to youth basketball, AAU is the most competitive level of play out there. So how does one get started?
To start an AAU basketball team, you obviously need players. When it comes to selecting your team, be sure to identify players that offer different skill-sets. Make sure you have several players that can handle the ball, rebound, shoot, and play defense. An important asset to look for in a player is coachability. Does this player have the will and drive to improve? To have a successful team, you don't need an all-star roster. More importantly, look for players that can contribute in various ways and have a team-first attitude. Because there are no roster-size limits, you can have as few as five kids to as many as fifteen or more! I recommend somewhere between 8-10 committed players. You want to have enough depth on your bench in case of fouls, injuries, or players that are absent; however too many players will result in fewer available minutes and less chemistry on the court. Remember the more kids you have on your team, the harder it is to develop chemistry and to give players personal attention.
Once you have selected your team, it's time to meet with the parents and lay out the basic expectations and costs. There are obvious fees associated with AAU basketball. Unlike a league where you pay a set fee up front, AAU costs can range dramatically depending on how many tournaments you enter, gym time for practices, uniforms and equipment, traveling fees, etc. Unless you have a sponsor, which may be difficult to obtain when you are just starting out, those costs are going to come from your players' families. Keep in mind that the more players you keep on your roster, the more the team fees are divided; however that may also result in less game time for each player. In addition to explaining the costs, make sure to give parents an idea of your coaching background and philosophy, as well as what you expect from your players in terms of commitments. Good communication with your players' families will be an important part of building a strong foundation for your program.
AAU offers elite-level youth basketball competition. For that reason, you want to be well prepared before throwing your team into the fire of tournament play. When you feel you are ready to test your team's mettle, do a search for the local AAU-sanctioned events in your area. While AAU basketball runs year round, the "peak season" for tournaments takes place between March to August. Tournaments come in all shapes, sizes, and formats. They can range in cost from anywhere to $125-$400 or more. In most cases, you are guaranteed at least three games and can expect to play on both a Saturday and Sunday of a given weekend.
So what should you expect in your first tournament? For the most part, your team will likely play against experienced teams from the metro area you reside in. Unlike youth basketball leagues that may emphasize sportsmanship and fun, AAU can be a bit cutthroat. There are no rules against continuous pressing or running up the score and at times talented squads may ruthlessly take it to less-experienced clubs. Be prepared to take your lumps early on, even if you have a talented team. Championship clubs are not built overnight.
Over the course of a season, set realistic goals for your club and emphasize improvement. Also, keep things fun. Too often, the win at all costs mentality burns kids out and turns them off to continuing with the program. Make your players' experience with AAU memorable and rewarding by helping them to improve their abilities and offering them opportunities to show what they can do. This will be the key to starting an AAU basketball team and building it into a successful one!
